Weiss Distilling Co. Connects Detroit Distillery to COVID-19 Pandemic Needs
What started as a wild idea at a bachelor party more than a decade ago is now part of the fabric of Detroit’s nightlife and craft spirits scene. Detroit City Distillery, created by eight childhood friends and University of Michigan grads, has become a maker of small batch artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka with the help of local ingredients sourced directly from farms near their downtown Eastern Market distillery and tasting room.
Detroit Spirits also makes a point to support the community, partnering with restaurants and nonprofits like Bees in the D to produce exclusive labels and events. It’s an extension of the distillery’s passion for making things that are a little fun and a nod to Detroit’s rich history, including Paczki Day vodka infused with Hamtramck-based New Palace Bakery’s raspberry paczki and Blue Roar, a limited-edition single-barrel bourbon released ahead of April’s NFL Draft.
What Makes Weiss Distilling Co Different from Other Michigan Distilleries?
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the distillery stepped up to fill a crucial need by producing and selling hand sanitizer for hospitals, health care institutions, and other essential businesses. Knowing that there was much more demand than they could meet, the team reached out to Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) for help with getting their product in front of the right people.
PMBC connected the distillery to its COVID-19 Procurement Platform, which helped to get their sanitizer to the people who needed it most faster than they would have been able to reach on their own. To date, they have produced and sold 21,000 gallons of hand sanitizer to the hospital network, municipalities and other key organizations.
